Laura K. Gasiorowski to Teach at Annual Njicle Immigration Law and Criminal Acts Webinar

On Friday, December 10, 2021, Laura K. Gasiorowski will once again be participating in the annual NJICLE Immigration Law and Criminal Acts webcast presented by NJSBA. The panel, composed of criminal and immigration lawyers, will tackle the myriad legal issues that arise in “crimmigration”… the intersection of criminal and immigration law in the representation of noncitizens charged with criminal violations in state, federal and municipal courts. While Padilla requires criminal attorneys to provide immigration advice to defendants regarding the immigration consequences of their criminal convictions, there are many other complex areas in which a client’s non-citizen status may impact representation and legal strategy. Ms. Gasiorowski will address topics such as language fluency and comprehension in the context of the Court Interpreter’s Act and Fifth and Fourth Amendment waivers; bias, in trials and sentencing proceedings, and the implications of a parallel immigration proceeding on issues of bail, arrests and the Speedy Trial Act.
